ADHD: Parent & Family Support
"My parents don't know what to do with me and my brother won't even be in the same room as me if I'm fidgeting". My neighbour's daughter has come to visit again because she knows I also deal with ADHD. Having struggled to get the right diagnosis, she was relieved to finally have a label that fit her symptoms. "But now what," she says. "My parents need some help in figuring out the ins and outs of ADHD, how to help me and how to live with ADHD. They also need to take care of my brother and lots of their attention is going to me not him".
Life with a child or youth with ADHD can be challenging as well as frustrating and sometimes overwhelming. Children with ADHD can display disruptive behaviours and the needs of siblings may get less attention. Parents can support their children to manage daily challenges to bring a sense of calm to family life. (Smith & Segal, ADHD parenting tips, 2022)
